Make a map of the damage
Lay the dry shirt flat in good light. Note the number of holes, their position and whether they sit inside a broader thin patch. Look at the corresponding place on the inside. Take photographs before trimming loose threads or attempting a repair.
An opening along a seam may involve stitching rather than the main fabric. A small tear beside a known snag tells a different story from scattered holes found when unpacking stored clothes. None of those observations proves a cause, but they help narrow the questions.
Compare the location with the things that touch it: a belt buckle, trouser closure, counter edge, pack strap or rough furniture. Do not assume that a recurring waist-level hole is an insect problem if it consistently follows a contact point.
Check for evidence before blaming moths
University of California Integrated Pest Management recommends looking for signs such as silken tubes or mats, surface grazing and holes when inspecting for clothes moths. An isolated hole without other evidence is not enough to identify the pest.
Inspect nearby stored garments and sheltered folds rather than looking only at the damaged shirt. If you find convincing signs, separate the affected item while you seek appropriate textile-care and pest-management guidance. Do not throw a delicate wool shirt into a hot treatment simply because a general pest tip recommends heat.

Choose the repair according to the fabric around the hole
A small opening surrounded by sound knit may be a candidate for a discreet darn. A broad thin patch presents a different challenge: closing the center does not restore all the weakened cloth around it. A seam opening may need restitching rather than a patch across the body.
Ask a repairer how the repair will look, feel and stretch. A thick patch can be acceptable on an outer layer but uncomfortable against skin. If the shirt is new, contact the seller or maker before altering it. Include photographs of the whole garment, a close view and the care label. State what happened without asserting a manufacturing fault or insect cause that you cannot demonstrate.
Prevent the same contact damage
If damage repeatedly appears beneath the same pack strap, inspect the strap as well as the shirt. If a laundry fastener caught the knit, separate or secure that item before the next load.

Do holes in merino always mean moths?
No. Snags, friction, seam failure and other damage can also create openings. Look for additional insect evidence and inspect nearby items before deciding on pest treatment.
Can a merino T-shirt with a small hole be repaired?
Often it is worth asking a repairer, especially if the surrounding cloth is sound. The appropriate method depends on knit weight, location and whether a visible repair is acceptable.
Will a merino blend prevent holes?
Not completely. Some constructions add reinforcement, but repeated snagging or abrasion can still damage them. Match the shirt to the workload and inspect the source of recurring contact.
