Three numbers that answer different questions
If a listing says “150 g,” ask whether that is fabric density, the measured garment weight or merely part of the model name. A large long-sleeve shirt and a small short-sleeve tee can share the same GSM while weighing different amounts in your bag.
Nor should every number in a product title automatically be read as GSM. Icebreaker’s current base-layer guidance describes a Heat Index. Use explicit fabric specifications when comparing density across brands instead of silently converting a warmth-system label into grams per square meter.

Choose fabric weight for the layer
For comparable constructions, lower-density fabric is a sensible place to begin when you want less material and easier layering. Higher-density fabric is worth examining when you want a more substantial top. That is a starting point, not proof that one shirt will feel warmer or drier in every situation.
Knit structure, fit, fiber mix, airflow and the rest of the outfit still matter. A tight outer layer can change the experience of a thin tee; an open neckline can change how you ventilate a thicker top. There is no universal GSM-to-temperature conversion that incorporates all of those choices.

What a 200 GSM label tells you
It tells you the fabric weighs 200 grams per square meter, assuming the maker explicitly states that unit. It does not tell you the shirt’s exact thickness in millimeters. Different structures can use the same amount of material per area while presenting it differently.
Calling 200 GSM “heavy” without a comparison is therefore unhelpful. It is denser than 150 GSM and less dense than 250 GSM. Whether it feels substantial for your purpose depends on whether you are comparing summer tees, active base layers or heavier insulating tops.
A useful product example is MERIWOOL’s 190 short-sleeve tee: the manufacturer identifies a 190 g/m² jersey and separately gives a micron figure. Keeping those details separate makes the description more informative than calling the shirt simply “thin wool.”
Comparing 250 and 320
If both numbers are confirmed GSM, 320 represents more fabric mass per area than 250. If they are unverified model numbers, you first need the specifications. Neither reading alone gives you a tested warmth advantage or a safe temperature rating.
Compare two shirts with the same intended role. A 250 long-sleeve base layer and a differently constructed 320 overshirt do not isolate fabric density as the only variable. Choose according to how you will wear the garment, then use density to refine that choice rather than letting the biggest number win.
What is the best merino wool thickness?
There is no universal best. Start with the activity, layering role and preferred bulk, then compare documented fabric density and construction. GSM measures mass per area rather than physical thickness.
Is 200gsm merino fabric thick?
