Choosing detergent for merino shirts: read the bottle as well as the tag

A useful merino detergent clearly supports wool and fits the garment’s instructions. “Gentle,” “natural” and “free and clear” are not enough information on their own.

By John Morris · How we research

Wool compatibility comes before scent or branding

Woolmark recommends a mild, neutral detergent for wool and advises against heavy-duty, enzyme-containing biological detergents and bleach. Read both the use directions and exclusions on the product you actually have; formulations can differ across products carrying the same brand name.

A fragrance-free detergent can still have cleaning ingredients unsuitable for a particular garment. Likewise, a liquid sold for delicates may require you to check which delicate fibers it includes. If wool is not mentioned and the manufacturer cannot confirm compatibility, choose a product with a clearer instruction.

Keep the question narrow when asking a detergent company: “Is this exact formula suitable for washing wool clothing?” is more useful than asking whether the product is mild.

The bottle and the care label must agree

The detergent can permit machine washing while the shirt requires hand washing. Those statements are not a conflict: one describes a cleaning product’s possible uses, and the other restricts your garment. Use the overlap between them.

The same principle applies to softener. Some general wool guidance discusses limited use, while individual shirt makers prohibit it. Smartwool’s care advice, for example, says not to use fabric softener. Do not add conditioner or scent beads simply because another person’s wool sweater tolerated them.

If a care symbol is the confusing part, our label guide can help you turn it into a concrete wash decision. Keep stain removers separate from the basic detergent decision; they can have additional exclusions.

Measure for the water and the load you are using

Use the product’s dose instructions for the intended hand wash or machine load. A hotel sink, a small basin and a full washer do not use interchangeable capfuls. Concentrates make guesswork particularly unhelpful because a small extra amount can be a large proportion of the intended dose.

Check whether the directions distinguish water hardness or heavily soiled loads. Do not automatically select the highest dose because the shirt is expensive. If you consistently see residue or feel that rinsing is difficult, first check the dose and the chosen program rather than adding more product next time.

For travel, retain the detergent name and directions if you decant a suitable product into a smaller container. An unmarked bottle removes the very information you need when deciding how much to use. Avoid borrowing an unknown household powder at the destination merely because it is available.

When washing has not solved the problem

A mark, an odor and an uneven texture are different complaints. Extra detergent is not a universal answer. For a visible spot, use the stain-removal guide; for a shirt that smells after cleaning, work through the post-wash odor checks.

What is the best detergent to use on merino wool?

Choose a mild detergent explicitly suitable for wool and compatible with the shirt’s care directions. Woolmark recommends neutral wool detergent and advises avoiding bleach and enzyme-containing biological detergents. There is no single necessary brand.

Is fragrance-free detergent safe for merino?

Fragrance-free describes scent, not wool compatibility. Read the fabric exclusions and ask the detergent maker if wool suitability is unclear.

Should I use fabric softener on a merino shirt?

Follow the shirt maker’s instruction. If it prohibits softener, skip it even when general wool advice or a detergent label permits it in other circumstances.
