Separate the observations
Write down when you notice the smell: straight from the washer, during drying, after the shirt is fully dry or only when you wear it again. Then note where it is strongest. These simple distinctions keep you from treating every odor with the same extra wash.
A smell description alone cannot establish whether the cause is the wet fiber, retained residue or storage conditions. Note when the odor appears and where it is strongest before choosing another treatment.
If the odor disappears once the shirt is dry, you have learned something important without adding heat, chemicals or an extra cycle. If it persists, move on to the more specific checks below.
Choose the relevant branch
- Only while wet: finish drying before deciding on another wash.
- One area after drying: inspect that area and seek an appropriate local treatment.
- The whole load: examine the shared wash and drying process.
- Only after storage: inspect the bag, drawer or container as well as the shirt.
Check whether the shirt actually finished drying
Feel the collar, armpit seams and overlapping fabric. A dry-looking body can coexist with a damp thick edge. Make sure the shirt is not sitting on a saturated towel or folded onto itself. Follow the label’s method and give it adequate supported space.

Check the place where you put the clean shirt, too. A damp bag or a previously used packing cube can complicate the investigation. Compare the shirt before storage with the same shirt after storage so that you do not keep changing the wash for a problem that appears later.
If the odor remains in one area
Look for visible residue or a local mark at the same spot. Underarms can be exposed to products and perspiration that the rest of the shirt does not encounter, but that observation does not identify the exact material left behind. Describe what you can see and feel rather than choosing a stronger cleaner by guesswork.
Use the maker’s recommended routine and a compatible detergent at the correct dose. If a local treatment is needed, consult the stain-removal guide and the garment manufacturer. Spot treatments can have different restrictions from ordinary wash detergent.
Avoid applying undiluted cleaners or stacking several remedies in succession. If the first method was unsuitable, repeating it more intensely can damage the shirt without revealing why it smelled.
If the whole load smells unusual
Check whether other garments have the same problem. Review the amount of detergent, the selected program and how long the load sat after washing. Inspect the machine according to its own maintenance instructions. These checks do not require assuming that merino itself is the cause.
Change one relevant variable at a time when the care instructions permit it. For example, use the specified dose rather than an estimated capful, then remove and dry the load promptly. If you change detergent, cycle, temperature and drying method together, it is difficult to know what helped.
When the smell remains despite a compatible routine, contact the shirt maker with the model, label photograph and details of the process. You should not have to invent a more aggressive wash to make a new garment usable.
Why does merino wool smell when wet?
A wet-only odor can differ from an odor left in a dry garment. Let the shirt dry fully before judging it. Smell alone cannot establish whether the cause is fiber-related, laundry residue or a storage problem.
Should I wash a smelly merino shirt twice?
First check the initial method, detergent dose and complete drying. An immediate second wash with more detergent may repeat the same problem. Use the label-approved routine and seek model-specific advice if the odor persists.
Can I use vinegar or disinfectant to remove the smell?
