Three arrangements you will see
A set-in sleeve joins the body around the shoulder and armhole. A raglan seam runs diagonally toward the neckline. An offset design moves a seam from its conventional position, often without changing the entire sleeve shape. These describe construction, not a ranking of comfort.
Each arrangement can put stitching in a different place under your pack. A diagonal raglan seam may clear one person's shoulder strap and cross another person's strap farther toward the chest. An offset shoulder seam may avoid the top contact point but still meet a strap edge. Photograph the seam layout if it is difficult to understand from a front view.

Try the shirt with your loaded pack
Use a sensible trial load similar to what you normally carry. Adjust the backpack as you would before a walk, including the hip belt and sternum strap if fitted. A completely empty pack can sit differently and will not recreate the contact you want to assess.
Move your arms forward and overhead, turn your torso, and walk around indoors. Notice where stitching presses or where fabric bunches. If a seam bothers you immediately, do not assume it will disappear after a wash or a long hike. First adjust the pack properly, then decide whether the shirt construction still causes the issue.
Keep the test within the seller's return conditions. A clean indoor fitting can reveal an obvious mismatch without turning a returnable garment into a worn trail test.
Seam shape is only one source of rubbing
Pack straps can rub the fabric even where there is no seam. REI's base-layer guidance identifies heavy-pack abrasion as a concern for wool and discusses blends as one possible durability choice. That does not prove that every blend will outlast every all-wool shirt.
Inspect the pack itself for rough edges, exposed hook-and-loop fasteners, and worn strap surfaces. Check whether a chest strap sits over buttons or a zip. A smooth shoulder panel cannot compensate for an abrasive contact point farther down.
Fit also changes how the fabric behaves. Excess cloth can gather under a strap, while a stretched sleeve may pull on the underarm. If the whole top moves when you lift an arm, compare a different cut rather than selecting solely by the sleeve name.
Choose for your pack and your route
For a small daypack, a set-in sleeve that feels comfortable may be entirely suitable. For frequent loaded carries, comparing seam placement and construction is worth more attention. There is no reason to reject a shirt that works merely because another model advertises raglan sleeves.
In the hiking collection, compare photographs of the shoulder area with the contact points you found under your own pack. If pressure follows a seam, try another seam route; if wear appears across a broad strap area, investigate fabric durability and the strap surface.
Are flatlock seams always comfortable under a backpack?
They are designed to reduce seam bulk, but location, fit, strap pressure, and individual sensitivity still matter. Try the actual combination.
Does raglan mean the shirt has no shoulder seams?
No. It changes the route of the sleeve seam. Inspect the diagonal stitching rather than assuming the shoulder area is seamless.
