Read the generic fibre name after the trademark
The TENCEL brand includes lyocell and modal fibres. A label that specifically says TENCEL lyocell identifies the branded lyocell fibre; a retailer's shortened use of Tencel may leave out information you still need. The fibre producer describes its range using those separate names.
Lyocell is not wool, and a lyocell-rich shirt should not be classified as 100% merino. That may sound obvious, but terms such as natural, plant-based or plastic-free can distract from the actual fibre breakdown. Those descriptions do not turn a two-fibre fabric into all wool.
Example: Cool-Lite Sphere’s 60/40 fabric
Icebreaker lists Cool-Lite Sphere style IB0A56ZMC99 as 60% TENCEL lyocell and 40% merino, excluding decoration. The same page gives a 125 warmth-system value. Treat that number as the brand presents it; it is not permission to turn every 125 model name into a verified GSM measurement. See this style's fabric and care information.
When comparing an Amazon listing, match the generation and style rather than borrowing the nearest current specification. Similar family names can persist while fabrics change. Our product-listing guide provides a way to check those details before deciding.
What are you hoping the blend will change?
If you are looking for a warm-weather shirt, compare the actual cut, sleeve opening and fabric alongside composition. If you want a softer-looking drape for casual wear, inspect how the garment hangs rather than assuming every lyocell blend has the same appearance.
Keep the comparison fair: an airy short-sleeve blend and a substantial long-sleeve pure-wool top differ in more than fibre content. Start with shirts made for similar conditions. Our hot-weather guide can help define the use before you compare lightweight shirts.
The merino blends collection keeps lyocell candidates separate from all-wool choices.
When overnight laundry is the deciding requirement
The blend name does not establish an overnight drying time. Check the model’s permitted method, then use drying-time planning if your travel schedule makes that a deciding requirement.
Is TENCEL the same as merino?
No. TENCEL is a fibre brand whose range includes lyocell and modal. Merino is wool from merino sheep. A shirt containing both is a blend.
Is a plastic-free merino blend necessarily 100% wool?
No. It can contain a cellulosic fibre such as lyocell. Use the composition declaration rather than interpreting plastic-free as all-wool.
