That does not establish a drying time for two specific products. Fabric weight, knit, fit and ventilation can change how a finished shirt performs. Avoid comparing a dense polyester casual tee with a fine merino running top and attributing every difference to the fibers.
If you want to consider wool for the same job, look at merino running shirts and inspect the construction and blend. A familiar short-sleeve shape does not mean every merino tee has been designed for sustained active use.
For repeated wear away from laundry
Merino’s odor resistance can make it attractive when you will not wash immediately after each wear. Polyester garments can vary in finishes and odor behavior, so it is misleading to promise that every synthetic smells quickly or that every merino shirt remains odorless.
Plan around your own threshold for wearing a shirt again. A commuter who showers and changes after cycling has different requirements from a traveler taking one top from a walking tour to dinner. Neither routine is wrong; they simply place different value on repeat wear.

For a pack or other repeated rubbing
Abrasion is a separate issue from washing. REI notes that heavy pack straps can wear wool and identifies synthetic blends as one option for improved durability. That supports examining construction when a shirt will spend much of its life beneath a load.
Look at shoulder-seam position, strap contact and the actual fiber mix. Do not treat a tiny percentage of a second fiber as a measured durability guarantee. A blend can serve different purposes, including stretch or reinforcement, and those purposes should be stated rather than guessed.
If this is the main reason you are comparing materials, read merino-nylon blends and shirt durability before deciding. Polyester and nylon are not interchangeable words for every reinforcement system.
If you want to compare a mixed construction, browse merino blend shirts alongside the polyester shirt you already use. Keep the intended activity the same for both candidates.
Is merino better than polyester for running?
