Start with the layer you need
If your next-to-skin top mainly needs to fit smoothly under insulation and a shell, begin by considering the lighter option. If you specifically want a more substantial wool layer, the MERIWOOL deserves a closer look. These are selection inferences from the specifications, not measured temperature or comfort results.

What the numbers establish
The Smartwool SW016952 specification identifies the 150 g/m² fabric and recycled-nylon blend. The MERIWOOL 250 specification identifies 250 g/m² interlock and 18.5-micron merino. GSM describes mass per area of fabric; microns describe fiber diameter.
MERIWOOL therefore has more fabric mass per equal area. That does not mean the completed shirt weighs exactly 250 grams, nor that it is a calculable percentage warmer. The composition also creates a clear preference boundary. Choose the MERIWOOL if an all-wool body is a firm requirement. Smartwool's wool-against-skin description does not erase its nylon component.
Where this pair changes the rest of the outfit
If you already own a close-fitting fleece, compare both tops beneath that fleece before choosing the denser MERIWOOL. The extra fabric you wanted at the base must still fit through the upper arms and cuffs. If you expect the crew to be your visible top indoors, judge that outfit as well; the Smartwool’s slim cut may be more noticeable then.
